Mimosa Pudica RHS Seeds - Irish Plants Direct

Mimosa pudica, commonly known as the Sensitive Plant or Touch-Me-Not, is a fascinating annual that captivates gardeners with its unique behaviour and striking, pink, fluffy flower heads. Known for its ability to respond to touch by folding its leaves inward, Mimosa pudica is a truly interactive plant, perfect for garden enthusiasts of all ages.

The genus Mimosa derives from the Greek word "mimos," meaning "actor" or "mimic," referencing the plant’s dramatic reaction to physical contact. Pudica is Latin for "shy" or "bashful," highlighting its sensitive nature. Mimosa pudica is not only a conversation starter due to its leaf movements, but it also produces delicate, fragrant flowers that attract pollinators, including bees and butterflies.

This plant is recognised by the RHS Seed Scheme for its novelty and ornamental value. It is ideal for gardeners who enjoy experimenting with unique plants and adding interest to flower beds or containers.

Sensitive Plant grows to a height of 30 - 40 cm and is perfect for sunny locations where it can thrive in well-drained, moderately fertile soil. The plant’s lush, fern-like foliage makes it an attractive addition to herbaceous borders or mixed containers.

Sowing Instructions
Indoors: Sow seeds in trays or pots filled with moist, well-drained compost from February to April. Lightly cover the seeds, as they require light to germinate. Maintain a temperature of 20-22°C. Transplant seedlings into individual pots when large enough to handle and harden off before planting outdoors after the last frost.

Outdoors: Sow directly into prepared, well-drained soil from April to June. Scatter seeds thinly on the soil surface and gently press them down. Keep moist until germination occurs. Thin seedlings to a spacing of 20 - 25 cm for healthy growth.

Whether you are fascinated by its leaf movements or attracted to its delicate flowers, Mimosa pudica adds a unique, interactive element to any garden. Its engaging behaviour and ease of care make it a standout choice for any gardener looking to introduce something different into their outdoor space.
