Sow February to April for summer display; late summer sowings possible for autumn containers

Germination 7 to 14 days at 18 to 20°C; seeds need light to germinate so surface-sow without covering

Soil Moist, free-draining multi-purpose compost or loam; fertile but not overly rich

Height 10 to 20 cm; spread 20 to 30 cm depending on spacing and training

Flowering Late spring through autumn in warm, sheltered sites; remove spent flowers to prolong bloom

Good Companions Petunias; calibrachoa; bacopa; geraniums; silver foliage plants for contrast

 

Sowing Instructions

 

Surface sow thinly into trays or modules February–April and press seeds gently onto the compost surface without covering; maintain even moisture at 18–20°C. Prick out when large enough to handle and plant into containers or baskets after risk of frost, spacing 8–12 cm for baskets or 20–30 cm for bedding.

 

For earlier displays sow under cover in March or use a cold frame for April sowings. Protect seedlings from slugs and provide good air circulation.

 

Grow and Maintenance

 

Provide regular watering and a balanced liquid feed through the flowering season to support continuous bloom; avoid waterlogging. Deadhead lightly and trim back any leggy growth to encourage a fresh flush of flowers. Treat as an annual in frost-prone areas; in mild sheltered spots plants may persist longer. Refresh containers annually for the best display.
