Lemon Balm ORGANIC Herb Seed - Irish Plants Direct

Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis) is a fragrant and versatile perennial herb, loved for its fresh, citrus-scented leaves that add a delightful lemony flavour to teas, salads, desserts, and herbal infusions.

With its soft, green foliage and delicate white flowers, this easy-to-grow herb attracts beneficial pollinators while offering a wealth of culinary and medicinal uses.

Thriving in well-drained, fertile soil, lemon balm prefers a sunny or partially shaded location and grows to a height of 60 – 80 cm. Its bushy, spreading habit makes it perfect for herb gardens, borders, and container planting. Once established, this hardy perennial returns year after year, providing a continuous supply of fresh, aromatic leaves.

Beyond its culinary appeal, lemon balm has been valued for centuries in herbal medicine. Traditionally used to promote relaxation, ease digestive discomfort, and support restful sleep, it is a popular choice for homegrown herbal remedies. Its calming scent also makes it a natural addition to potpourris and homemade skincare products.

Sowing Instructions

Indoors: Start seeds indoors from March to May. Use seed trays or pots filled with fine, well-draining compost, sowing seeds thinly on the surface. Lightly press seeds into the soil without covering, as they require light to germinate. Keep the temperature between 18-22°C and maintain moisture until germination. Once seedlings are well established, transplant them into individual pots before hardening off and planting outdoors.

Outdoors: Direct sow outdoors from late April to June in a sunny or partially shaded location. Scatter seeds thinly onto prepared soil, pressing them lightly into the surface. Water gently and thin seedlings as needed to allow ample space for mature growth.

Lemon Balm is a beautifully fragrant and easy-to-grow herb, offering a continuous harvest of citrusy leaves that are perfect for teas, cooking, and natural remedies. A wonderful addition to any herb garden, it is as beneficial as it is aromatic.
