Leek Winner is a robust late maturing variety bred for winter hardiness and reliability.

 

Plants form strong upright stems with dark blue green leaves and thick white shanks up to 25 cm long. The flavour is mild and sweet, improving after exposure to cold weather.

 

This variety is particularly valued for its exceptional frost resistance, tolerating temperatures as low as –15°C, which allows harvesting well into late winter. Sow January to April under cover, or March to May outdoors in drills

Germination 14 to 21 days at 15–20°C

Soil and Position Fertile, well drained soil in full sun. Prefers deep soil enriched with organic matter

Height 40–60 cm with upright habit

Harvest October to February. Stems remain firm and usable through winter

 

Sowing Instructions

 

For early sowings, start seeds under glass in pots or trays, covering lightly with compost or vermiculite. For outdoor sowings, sow thinly 1.5 cm deep in drills 30 cm apart. Transplant seedlings when pencil thick, trimming roots and tops before planting into deep holes or trenches. Water well to establish.

 

Grow and Maintenance

 

Keep soil moist during dry periods and weed regularly. Earth up around stems as they grow to increase the length of the white shank. Apply a balanced fertiliser mid?season to encourage strong growth. Winner leeks are hardy and low maintenance, requiring little protection even in severe winters.
