Hollyhock Giant Single Mixed forms strong vertical accents in cottage borders and against walls or fences and is highly valued for summer impact and nectar rich blooms that attract bees and butterflies. Biennial or short lived perennial in habit these plants produce architectural flower stems that are excellent for back of border planting and cutting.

Sowing Instructions

 

Sow thinly on the surface or cover very lightly in trays or modules of moist seed compost. For spring sowing start March to May and provide a cool period to aid germination. Keep at cool temperatures around 10 to 15°C and maintain even moisture without waterlogging. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle and space 45 to 60 cm apart. Harden off before planting out into a sheltered position and support tall flowering stems if necessary.

 

Grow in full sun or light shade in fertile well drained soil enriched with organic matter. Mulch to conserve moisture and protect crowns in winter in exposed locations. Remove spent flower spikes to tidy plants and encourage further flowering and collect seed from selected plants for future sowing. Divide congested clumps or lift and replant in early spring to maintain vigour.
