A striking perennial with sunflower like blooms golden yellow petals surrounding rich mahogany red centres, set against deep green foliage with purple tinged stems.

 

This bold colour contrast adds drama and warmth to borders, prairie style plantings, and wildlife gardens from midsummer into autumn.

 

Also known as False Sunflower, this North American native is hardy, long-flowering, and highly attractive to bees and butterflies.

 

It thrives in full sun and well-drained, moderately fertile soil, flowering reliably from the first year when sown early.

Sowing Instructions

 

Sow indoors from February to April. Cover seeds lightly with fine compost and keep moist. Maintain at 18 to 22°C. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle and harden off before planting out after the last frost. For natural stratification, sow outdoors in autumn.

 

Grow and Maintenance

 

Water during dry spells in the first year. Once established, plants are drought tolerant and low maintenance. Deadhead to prolong flowering or leave seedheads for winter interest. Divide clumps every 3 to 4 years to maintain vigour.
