Helenium Hoopsii Seeds

A bold and early flowering perennial Helenium hoopesii produces large, golden-yellow daisy-like blooms with prominent central cones. Each flower, up to 7–8 cm across, is borne singly on tall, upright stems above clumps of grey-green foliage.

 

Flowering from late spring through summer, it brings vibrant colour and structure to borders, meadows, and naturalistic plantings.

 

Also known as Mountain Sneezeweed or Owl’s Claws, this hardy species is long lived, easy to grow, and highly attractive to bees and butterflies. It thrives in full sun and well drained soils, tolerating dry conditions once established.

Sowing Instructions

 

Sow indoors from February to April. Surface-sow onto moist compost and press lightly do not cover. Maintain at 18 to 22°C. For improved germination, stratify seeds in the fridge for 4 to 6 weeks before sowing. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle and harden off before planting out. Alternatively, sow outdoors in autumn for natural stratification.

 

Grow and Maintenance

 

Water during dry spells in the first year. Once established, plants are drought-tolerant and low-maintenance. Deadhead to prolong flowering or leave seedheads for wildlife interest. Cut back in late autumn or early spring. Divide clumps every 3 to 4 years to maintain vigour.
