Helenium Autumnale Seeds

A vibrant late season perennial, Helenium autumnale produces masses of daisy like flowers in rich shades of yellow, orange, and red, often with a prominent central cone.

 

Its upright stems and branching habit create a bold presence in borders, prairie-style plantings, and pollinator gardens. Flowering from late summer into autumn, it provides essential colour and nectar when many other plants are fading.

 

Native to North America and commonly known as ‘Sneezeweed’  this hardy perennial thrives in full sun and moist, fertile soils. It is highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects.

Sowing Instructions

 

Sow indoors from February to April. Surface-sow onto moist compost and press lightly  do not cover. Maintain at 18 to 22°C. For improved germination, stratify seeds in the fridge for 4 to 6 weeks before sowing. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle and harden off before planting out. Alternatively, sow outdoors in autumn for natural stratification.

 

Grow and Maintenance

 

Water regularly during dry spells. Deadhead to prolong flowering or leave seedheads for wildlife interest. Cut back in late autumn or early spring. Divide clumps every 3 to 4 years to maintain vigour.
