Foxglove Excelsior Mixed Seeds - Irish Plants Direct

Digitalis purpurea is a stunning and elegant biennial known for its towering spikes of tubular flowers, which come in a vibrant mix of colours including shades of pink, purple, white, and cream.

The genus name Digitalis is derived from the Latin word digitus, meaning "finger," due to the shape of the flowers resembling a finger. Purpurea, the species name, refers to the plant's often purple flowers. This variety is particularly prized for its impressive height, colourful blooms, and its ability to attract pollinators like bees and hummingbirds.

Growing to a height of 90-120 cm, Foxglove Excelsior Mixed is ideal for adding vertical interest and colour to borders, cottage gardens, or wildflower areas. Its tall spikes of flowers bloom in mid to late summer, creating a striking visual effect.

These plants are perfect for adding a touch of elegance and drama to any garden, and they also thrive in partially shaded spots, making them a great choice for woodland gardens.

Sowing Instructions

Sow seeds indoors from February to April in trays or pots filled with moist, well-drained compost. Press the seeds lightly into the surface but do not cover them, as they need light to germinate. Keep the compost moist and maintain a temperature of 18-21°C. Germination usually takes 14-21 days.

For outdoor sowing, wait until May to June, and choose a partially shaded or sunny spot in well-drained soil. Scatter the seeds thinly and press them gently into the soil without covering. Keep the soil moist until germination. Once the seedlings are large enough, transplant them to their final positions, spacing them 30-45 cm apart.

Foxglove Excelsior Mixed prefers moist, well-drained soil and a location with partial to full sun. Water regularly, particularly during dry spells, and feed with a balanced fertiliser to support healthy growth and flowering. Deadhead spent flowers to prolong blooming and prevent self-seeding if desired.

This beautiful and versatile plant adds elegance, colour, and height to any garden, whether planted in borders, wildflower meadows, or shaded areas. Foxglove Excelsior Mixed is easy to grow and will reward gardeners with spectacular, long-lasting blooms year after year.
