A charming and strongly scented perennial,  that produces masses of frilled pink blooms held above neat evergreen cushions of blue grey foliage.

 

Known as Cheddar Pink, this classic rock garden species is prized for its intense clove fragrance and long flowering season, bringing colour and perfume to borders containers and gravel gardens.

 

It forms low spreading mats that become smothered in blooms from late spring into midsummer, with occasional repeat flowering later in the season.

 

The compact habit makes it ideal for edging paths rockeries walls and sunny raised beds. Bees and early summer pollinators are drawn to the nectar rich flowers while the evergreen foliage provides year round structure.

 

This hardy perennial thrives in full sun and well drained alkaline or neutral soil and is exceptionally drought tolerant once established.

Sowing Instructions

Sow seeds on the surface of moist well drained compost and lightly cover with a fine layer of soil or vermiculite. Maintain a temperature of 18 to 22°C in a propagator or covered tray. Transplant seedlings into individual pots when large enough to handle. Harden off and plant out after the last frost spacing 20 to 30 cm apart. For direct sowing scatter thinly over prepared soil once the ground has warmed.

 

Grow and Maintenance

Water sparingly as Cheddar Pinks prefer dry conditions once established. Trim lightly after flowering to maintain shape and encourage fresh growth. Avoid heavy soils or waterlogging. Ideal for rock gardens walls containers and sunny borders.
