Cimicifuga Racemosa Seeds - Irish Plants Direct

Cimicifuga racemosa, commonly known as Black Cohosh, is a graceful perennial prized for its tall, elegant flower spikes and medicinal properties.

The Latin name Cimicifuga is derived from the Greek words kimis (bedbug) and fugare (to drive away), referring to the plant’s reputed ability to repel insects.

The species name racemosa refers to the plant’s raceme-like clusters of white flowers. Black Cohosh is not only appreciated for its striking appearance but also its use in herbal medicine, particularly for supporting women's health.

This perennial produces long, creamy white, bottlebrush-like blooms that appear in late summer to early autumn, making it an excellent addition to the back of borders or woodland gardens. It thrives in shaded or semi-shaded spots, where its elegant stature and dramatic flower spikes create a soft, vertical accent in the garden. Black Cohosh is also known for its ability to attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies.

This sturdy plant grows to a height of 1.2–1.5 metres and prefers moist, well-drained soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Cimicifuga racemosa is particularly well-suited for shaded woodland areas or garden corners where other plants may struggle.
