Chilli Pepper Alma Picante Seeds

A traditional Hungarian cherry pepper variety producing round, thick walled fruits with a unique balance of sweetness and heat.

 

The fruits begin creamy white, turn orange, and finally ripen to a deep glossy red. Compact plants are highly productive, yielding dozens of peppers through the summer.

 

The flavour is aromatic and slightly smoky, with a medium heat level of around 2,000–3,000 Scoville units. This makes Alma Picante hotter than a sweet pepper but milder than a jalapeño, offering versatility in the kitchen.

Sow February to April indoors in pots or trays

Germination 10 to 21 days at 20–25°C

Soil and Position Fertile, free draining compost in full sun. Best grown under glass or in a sheltered outdoor spot

Harvest July to October. Fruits ripen from creamy white to orange to red

 

Sowing Instructions

 

Sow seeds indoors in pots or trays of moist compost, covering lightly with vermiculite. Keep at a steady 20–25°C until germination. Transplant seedlings into individual pots once large enough to handle. Harden off and plant out after the last frost, spacing 40 cm apart.

 

Grow and Maintenance

 

Water regularly and feed with a high potash fertiliser once flowering begins. Support plants if heavily laden with fruit. Pick peppers regularly to encourage further cropping. Fruits can be harvested at any stage of ripening depending on flavour preference.

 

Uses and Benefits

 

Perfect for stuffing, grilling, and roasting thanks to their thick walls. The peppers can also be dried and ground into paprika, or pickled for winter use. Their attractive colour changes and compact growth make them suitable for containers and ornamental planting as well as productive gardens.
