Sow seeds indoors from March to April in trays or pots filled with fine compost. Sow 1.5 cm deep and keep moist at a steady 15–20°C. Germination typically takes 14–21 days. Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant into individual pots and grow on until ready to plant out.

 

Choose a sunny or lightly shaded site with fertile, moisture-retentive soil and space plants 30–40 cm apart. Water consistently throughout the growing season and remove lower leaves to expose the crown. Harvest when roots are firm, smooth, and fully developed, typically from August to December.
