Cauliflower Verde De Macerata Seeds

A distinctive Italian heirloom cauliflower originating from the Macerata region.

 

Unlike conventional white cauliflowers, this variety forms compact, apple green heads weighing up to 1–1.3 kg. The colour remains bright even after cooking, and the flavour is mild, nutty, and slightly sweet, often compared to fresh peas.

 

Verde di Macerata is a medium early to medium late variety, recommended for open field cultivation. It performs well in fertile, well drained soils and is particularly suited to autumn harvests.

 

The plants are vigorous, with large protective leaves that shield the heads from sun and weather.

Sowing Instructions

 

Sow seeds thinly in trays or modules indoors at 13–18°C, or directly outdoors in a seed bed. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle, spacing 60 cm apart in rows 60 cm apart. Firm soil well around plants to encourage strong stems.

 

Grow and Maintenance

 

Keep soil consistently moist to prevent buttoning (small heads). Apply a nitrogen rich feed in midsummer to support vigorous growth. Protect young plants from cabbage root fly with collars and netting. Remove yellowing leaves to improve air circulation. Heads are ready when firm and compact; cut with a sharp knife leaving some protective leaves attached.
