Sow February to June indoors. Germination 14 to 30 days at 20–25°C. Soil and Position Free draining sandy compost; prefers bright light and warmth. Height Varies by species from 5 cm to over 30 cm. Flowering Summer once mature; flowers vary in colour and form depending on species.

 

Sowing instructions

 

Sow seeds indoors from February to June on the surface of moist sandy compost. Cover lightly with fine grit or vermiculite. Place in a propagator or cover with glass or clear plastic to maintain humidity. Keep at 20 to 25°C in bright light but out of direct sun. Germination may be slow and irregular. Transplant seedlings into individual pots once large enough to handle.

 

Grow and maintenance

 

Grow in bright light in a warm position. Use a free draining cactus compost and water sparingly allowing soil to dry between waterings. Reduce watering in winter when plants are dormant. Feed monthly during the growing season with a low nitrogen cactus fertiliser. Repot as plants grow and handle carefully to avoid damage from spines.
