Burning Bush Seeds – Irish Plants Direct

A striking and aromatic perennial, Dictamnus fraxinella produces tall spires of star shaped flowers in soft pink  each delicately veined and held above elegant ash like foliage.

Known as Burning Bush or Gas Plant, this species is famed for the fragrant oils it releases in warm weather, giving the foliage a citrus resin scent and creating a unique shimmering effect in the heat.

It forms a long lived clump that becomes more impressive each year.

Flowering begins in early summer and continues for several weeks, attracting bees butterflies and beneficial insects. Once established it is exceptionally hardy drought tolerant and low maintenance, making it ideal for sunny borders gravel gardens and naturalistic plantings.

This slow growing perennial prefers full sun and well drained soil and dislikes disturbance once planted. It rewards patience with longevity reliability and a refined architectural presence in the garden.

Sowing Instructions
Sow seeds on the surface of moist well drained compost and lightly cover with a fine layer of soil or grit. Place outdoors or in a cold frame to allow natural winter chilling which is essential for germination. Alternatively provide artificial stratification by placing sown pots in the refrigerator for 6 to 8 weeks. Germination can be slow and irregular. Transplant seedlings into individual pots when large enough to handle and grow on in cool bright conditions. Plant out in final positions without disturbing the rootball.

Grow and Maintenance
Water during prolonged dry spells but avoid overwatering. Once established the plant is drought tolerant and requires minimal feeding. Avoid lifting or dividing as Dictamnus resents root disturbance. Cut back spent stems in autumn. Ideal for sunny borders gravel gardens and Mediterranean style plantings.
