Bells of Ireland Seed – Irish Plants Direct

A striking annual with tall spires of apple green calyces surrounding tiny white flowers. Known botanically as Moluccella laevis this elegant plant is prized for its unusual colour and form. The fresh green bells make a dramatic addition to borders and cutting gardens and are highly valued by florists for both fresh and dried arrangements.

Unlike many annuals Bells of Ireland provide height and structure as well as colour. Their long lasting stems and unique appearance make them a favourite for summer displays and bouquets.

Height Approx 60 to 90 cm; tall upright habit. Flowering July to September; long spikes of green bells with small white flowers inside.

Sowing instructions

Sow seeds indoors from February to April on the surface of moist compost and press lightly without covering as light aids germination. Keep at 15 to 20°C until seedlings appear. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle into individual pots. Harden off and plant out after frost spacing 30 cm apart. For direct sowing outdoors sow in April in prepared soil and thin seedlings as required.

Grow and maintenance

Grow in full sun or light shade in fertile well drained soil. Water regularly during dry spells and feed with a balanced fertiliser to encourage strong growth. Tall stems may require staking in exposed sites. Deadhead faded blooms to prolong flowering or allow some to set seed for self sowing. Stems can be cut for fresh arrangements or dried for long lasting displays.

Uses and benefits

Perfect for borders cutting gardens and floral arrangements. The tall green spires add height and contrast to mixed plantings and combine beautifully with bright summer flowers. Excellent for fresh bouquets and for drying where the bells retain their colour and form. Easy to grow and highly ornamental Bells of Ireland also attract pollinators to the garden.
