Amaranthus Velvet Curtains RHS Seeds - Irish Plants Direct

Amaranthus caudatus 'Velvet Curtains' is a striking annual renowned for its tall, upright stems adorned with deep burgundy-red foliage and cascading crimson flower plumes. This dramatic plant creates a bold focal point in garden beds, borders, or mixed displays. The name Amaranthus derives from the Greek word amarantos, meaning "unfading," reflecting the plant's enduring beauty, while caudatus means "tailed," describing its unique flower form. 'Velvet Curtains' adds architectural interest and rich colour to any garden setting.

This sun-loving plant thrives in well-drained, moderately fertile soil and reaches an impressive height of 1.2 - 1.5 metres, making it ideal for the back of borders or as a statement piece in large containers. Its vibrant flowers attract pollinators, enhancing biodiversity in your garden.

Recognised with the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit (AGM), Amaranthus Velvet Curtains is celebrated for its exceptional garden performance and reliability. As part of the Royal Horticultural Society seed scheme, these seeds are of premium quality, ensuring outstanding results.

Indoors: Sow seeds in trays or pots filled with moist, well-drained compost from March to April. Lightly cover with a fine layer of compost and keep at a temperature of 18-20°C. Transplant seedlings into individual pots when large enough to handle, and harden off before planting outdoors after the last frost.

Outdoors: Sow directly into prepared, weed-free soil from April to May. Lightly cover the seeds with soil and keep moist until germination occurs. Thin seedlings to the recommended spacing for robust growth.

With its towering height, deep red tones, and RHS AGM recognition, Amaranthus Velvet Curtains is a stunning choice for gardeners seeking bold, dramatic displays with a touch of elegance.
