Tomato Prune Noire Seeds – Irish Plants Direct

Tomato Prune Noire (Solanum lycopersicum L.) is a rare and striking heirloom variety, valued for its unique, elongated plum-shaped fruits with deep mahogany to almost black skin and rich, complex flavour.

The unusual colouration, paired with its distinctive shape, makes it a standout choice for gardeners and chefs seeking something extraordinary.

The fruits are medium-sized, firm, and meaty with few seeds, making them excellent for slicing, roasting, and sauces. Their smoky sweet taste with subtle tangy undertones adds depth to salads and cooked dishes alike.

As an indeterminate type, Prune Noire grows tall and will require staking or caging for support. It thrives in sunny, sheltered spots outdoors or under glass, rewarding you with heavy crops throughout the summer.

Sowing Instructions

Indoors: Sow seeds from February to April in pots or seed trays filled with fine seed compost. Cover lightly with compost, water gently, and maintain a temperature of 18–21°C. Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant into individual pots and continue to grow in warm, bright conditions.

Outdoors/Greenhouse: Harden off seedlings and plant out after the last frost, spacing 45–60 cm apart. Provide support with canes or stakes and pinch out side shoots regularly to focus energy on fruit production. Water consistently and feed with a high-potash fertiliser to encourage heavy cropping.

Harvest when fruits are fully ripened to their characteristic dark mahogany hue for the best flavour.

Tomato Prune Noire is an excellent choice for gardeners who enjoy unusual, gourmet varieties. Its beautiful appearance and rich flavour make it a standout addition to both the vegetable patch and the kitchen.
