Shasta Daisy Alaska Seeds

This long lived cottage garden perennial forms neat clumps of dark green foliage from which strong upright stems rise to bear large white daisy flowers with bright yellow centres.

 

Each plant produces abundant blooms over an extended season creating a classic summer display that is both striking and reliable. The flowers are held well above the foliage on stiff stems making them excellent for cutting and arranging in vases while the clump forming habit gives structure to borders and cottage plantings.

 

Alaska is hardy and vigorous in a wide range of garden soils and tolerates coastal exposure and occasional dry spells once established. The blooms attract bees and other pollinators and provide consistent seasonal interest with minimal maintenance when given full sun and good drainage.

Sowing instructions

 

Sow between February and May on a warm windowsill or propagator into trays of moist compost and cover with about 5 mm of sieved compost. When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant into 7.5 cm pots to grow on then plant out after hardening off.

 

Grow and maintenance

 

Plant in full sun in well drained soil and feed moderately to support steady flowering. Water during dry spells and remove spent blooms to prolong the display. Space plants about 40 to 50 cm apart for good airflow and healthy clump forming growth. Divide clumps every few years in spring or autumn to maintain vigour.

 

Uses and benefits

 

Excellent for borders, middle of beds and as long lasting cut flowers. The large white blooms with bright yellow centres provide strong summer colour, attract pollinators and create an effective backdrop for lower-growing perennials. Leaving some seedheads benefits birds and extends seasonal interest.
