Round Leaved Sundew Seeds - Irish Plants Direct

A captivating native carnivorous species, Drosera rotundifolia forms compact rosettes of rounded leaves covered in glistening red tentacles that trap small insects.

These jewel like droplets shimmer in the light, giving the plant both ornamental appeal and remarkable functionality. Perfect for bog gardens, containers, and specialist collections, this hardy sundew thrives in nutrient poor, acidic conditions where few other plants succeed.

This slow growing perennial naturally inhabits peat bogs, wet heaths, and sphagnum rich soils. When grown in cultivation, it rewards gardeners with delicate white summer flowers held above the foliage on slender stems.

Once established, Drosera rotundifolia is surprisingly resilient and can overwinter outdoors in suitable climates.

Sowing Instructions
For best results, stratify seeds by placing them in the refrigerator for 4 to 6 weeks before sowing. Scatter seeds thinly on the surface of moist, peat based compost and do not cover, as light aids germination. Maintain temperatures between 15 and 20°C and keep the compost constantly damp using rainwater or distilled water. Germination typically occurs within 1 to 2 months. Transplant seedlings only when large enough to handle, keeping roots undisturbed.

Grow and Maintenance
Provide full sun and consistently wet, acidic soil. Use only rainwater or distilled water, as tap water can harm the plant. Avoid fertilisers, as Drosera rotundifolia obtains nutrients from captured insects. In winter, allow the plant to enter dormancy by keeping it cool and moist. Remove old leaves in spring to encourage fresh growth. When grown in containers, a tray of standing water helps maintain ideal moisture levels.
