Pulsatilla Heiler Hybrids Flower Seeds - Irish Plants Direct

Pulsatilla Heiler Hybrids, often referred to as Pasque Flower, is a stunning, early-blooming perennial that adds a burst of vibrant colour to the spring garden. Known for its beautiful, nodding flowers that come in shades of purple, white, and pink, Pulsatilla Heiler Hybrids is a refined cultivar that combines the best features of the species, offering larger flowers and a more compact growth habit. Its distinctive, feathery seed heads, which follow the blooms, provide interest long after the flowers have faded.

The genus Pulsatilla is derived from the Latin word pulso, meaning to strike or beat, which refers to the gentle motion of the flowers in the wind. The Heiler Hybrids cultivar has been developed to offer improved flower size, vigour, and a more refined shape compared to other types, making it an exceptional addition to any garden.

Awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit (AGM), Pulsatilla Heiler Hybrids is highly praised for its excellent performance in the UK climate, thriving in spring when many other plants are still dormant. Its early flowering makes it a favourite in cottage gardens, rockeries, and woodland gardens, where it brings colour to the landscape when most other plants are not yet in bloom. Its nodding blooms are also attractive to pollinators, including bees and butterflies.

This variety reaches a height of 30 - 40 cm, making it perfect for planting in front of borders, in rock gardens, or in containers. It can also be grown in more naturalistic settings, where its soft, feathered seed heads will continue to provide beauty long after the flowers have finished blooming.

Pulsatilla Heiler Hybrids thrives in well-drained soil in a sunny or partially shaded spot. While it is relatively low-maintenance, it does benefit from protection from excessive moisture, particularly in the winter months, which can cause root rot. Once established, it is drought-tolerant and requires minimal watering. Deadheading spent flowers will encourage further blooms, and cutting back the plant in late autumn will help maintain a tidy appearance.

Sowing Instructions
Indoors: Sow seeds in trays or pots filled with moist, well-drained compost from February to April. Press the seeds lightly into the surface, as light is required for germination. To improve germination, you may wish to cold-stratify the seeds by placing them in the fridge for 2-4 weeks before sowing. Maintain a temperature of 18-20°C and keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Transplant seedlings into individual pots when large enough to handle, and harden off before planting outdoors after the last frost.

Outdoors: Sow directly into prepared, well-drained soil from April to May. Scatter seeds thinly on the surface and gently press them down. Keep moist until germination occurs. Thin seedlings to 25 - 30 cm apart for healthy growth.

With its delicate, early spring blooms and elegant seed heads, Pulsatilla Heiler Hybrids is a lovely and low-maintenance addition to any garden. Ideal for rockeries, cottage gardens, or naturalistic planting schemes, it adds a soft, early touch of colour and texture.
