Poppy Black Swan Seeds

A dramatic laciniatum-type poppy with frilly, finely cut petals in deep burgundy-red, almost black, producing a frothy, peony-like display on tall stems.

 

Superb for bold drifts, mixed borders, and as an unusual filler that adds texture and dark colour to summer plantings.

Sow March to May or August to October; direct sow where plants are to flower.

Germination 14 to 21 days under steady conditions.

Soil and Position Loam, chalk, or sandy soils; tolerant of acidic, alkaline, or neutral conditions; plant in full sun.

Height Up to approx 90 cm; tall, upright stems ideal for backgrounds and natural drifts.

Flowering June to October; long-lasting summer colour with regular deadheading or allow seedheads to set for self-sowing.

 

Sowing instructions

 

Sow thinly and directly into finely raked, warm, moist soil about 5 mm deep where plants are to flower. Thin seedlings to around 25 cm apart for sturdy plants and good airflow. Autumn sowings establish for earlier flowers the following year.

 

Grow and maintenance

 

Best grown in full sun on moderately fertile, well-drained soil; avoid over-rich conditions which can reduce flowering. Water to establish, then water sparingly. Cut back after flowering or leave some seedheads to ripen for self-seeding; plants do not transplant well due to long taproots.

 

Uses and benefits

 

Striking in mixed borders, cottage schemes, and meadow-style plantings; the unusual dark, frilled blooms attract pollinators and create dramatic contrast where a bold focal colour is required.
