Peppermint Herb Seeds. - Irish Plants Direct

Peppermint (Mentha × piperita L.) is a vigorous and aromatic perennial herb, treasured for its refreshing, cool flavour and strong scent.

Its dark green leaves with a hint of purple make it both ornamental and highly useful, perfect for teas, desserts, cocktails, and savoury dishes. Known for its soothing properties, peppermint has been valued for centuries in both the kitchen and natural remedies.

This fast growing variety produces lush foliage throughout the season and thrives in beds, borders, or containers. It spreads readily, making it an excellent ground cover when controlled, or a reliable potted herb for patios and windowsills. Its strong, fresh aroma also makes it ideal for use in herbal sachets, oils, and as a natural insect repellent.

A magnet for bees and pollinators, peppermint is as beneficial to wildlife as it is to the gardener. Hardy and easy to grow, it provides a long-lasting harvest of fresh, fragrant leaves from late spring to autumn.

Sowing Instructions

Indoors: Sow seeds from February to April in trays or pots filled with moist, fine compost. Press seeds lightly onto the surface without covering, as they need light to germinate. Maintain a temperature of 18–21°C and keep soil consistently moist. Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant into individual pots and grow on before hardening off.

Outdoors: Direct sow from late April to May in well-prepared, damp but well-drained soil. Scatter seeds thinly, press gently into the surface, and water lightly. Thin seedlings to 25–30 cm apart for healthy growth.

To prolong harvests, pinch back flower heads as they appear and pick leaves regularly. Grow in pots to prevent spreading if space is limited.

Peppermint is a refreshing and versatile herb, offering a steady supply of fragrant leaves for culinary, medicinal, and ornamental use. A must-have addition to every herb garden.
