A spectacular evergreen tree native to New Zealand, Metrosideros excelsa is renowned for its brilliant crimson brush like flowers that appear in early to midsummer.

 

Often called the New Zealand Christmas Tree, it brings a dramatic burst of colour and a distinctly coastal character to gardens, patios, and sheltered landscapes.

Its leathery grey green leaves, gnarled branching, and naturally sculptural form make it a striking ornamental even when not in bloom.

Sowing Instructions

Sow seeds thinly on the surface of moist, free draining compost and do not cover, as light aids germination. Maintain temperatures between 18 and 22°C and keep the compost lightly moist. Germination usually occurs within 1 to 2 months. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle, taking care not to disturb the roots. Grow on in bright, warm conditions and move outdoors only after all risk of frost has passed.

 

Grow and Maintenance

Provide full sun and lean, well drained soil for best growth. Water sparingly, allowing the compost to dry slightly between waterings. Feed lightly during the growing season to support steady development. Prune in late spring to shape and encourage branching. In cooler climates, container grown plants should be overwintered in a frost free greenhouse or conservatory. Once established, Metrosideros excelsa is exceptionally wind and salt tolerant.
