Morning Glory Grandpa Otts Seeds

An eye catching half hardy annual climber with intense violet blue trumpet shaped flowers marked by a vivid ruby red star at the throat.

 

Extremely vigorous and fast growing, Grandpa Otts is perfect for trellis, arches, fences and tall containers where a spectacular vertical summer display is wanted.

 

Flowers open in the morning and provide a long season of colour from early summer into autumn.

Sow March to May indoors on a warm windowsill or in a propagator for earlier plants; direct sow outdoors April to May after all risk of frost has passed.

Germination 5 to 14 days at 18 to 22°C; scarify or nick the hard seed coat or soak overnight to speed up germination.

Soil Loam clay or sandy soil; tolerant of acidic alkaline or neutral soils; prefers a sunny warm position with good drainage.

Height Up to 300 cm when trained; spread 40 cm or more depending on support and pruning.

Flowering June to September with peak display in midsummer; deadhead to prolong flowering and to reduce excessive self sowing.

Good Companions Sweet peas; nasturtiums; clematis; climbing roses.

Avoid Pairing With Deep Shade Loving Plants that will be outcompeted for light

 

Sowing Instructions

 

Soak or nick seeds overnight then sow individually in modular compost March to May and keep at 18 to 22°C. Cover lightly and keep the compost evenly moist. Transplant when sturdy and harden off before planting out with strong supports in place. For direct sowing wait until the soil is warm and all risk of frost has passed.

 

Grow and Maintenance

 

Grow in full sun and water regularly while establishing; avoid waterlogged conditions. Train young shoots onto supports and pinch out growing tips to encourage bushier side growth if a denser display is desired. Mulch to conserve moisture in containers and beds. Collect ripe seed heads if you wish to save seed or prevent unwanted volunteers.
