Lavender Munstead Seeds - Irish Plants Direct

Lavandula angustifolia is a compact, fragrant variety of lavender renowned for its exquisite, aromatic purple-blue flowers and silvery-green foliage.

The genus Lavandula is derived from the Latin word lavare, meaning "to wash," as the plant was historically used in baths for its soothing fragrance.

Angustifolia refers to its narrow, lance-shaped leaves. Munstead is a popular cultivar named after the Munstead Wood garden in England, where it was developed by the famous plantsman Gertrude Jekyll. This variety is particularly prized for its hardiness, ease of cultivation, and its rich, sweet scent that attracts pollinators like bees and butterflies.

Reaching a height of 30-40 cm, Lavender Munstead is perfect for edging, borders, or containers, adding both fragrance and beauty to any garden. Its strong, upright stems carry dense spikes of vibrant lavender flowers, which are often harvested for use in dried arrangements, potpourri, and homemade sachets. This versatile herb is also a fantastic choice for herb gardens or as a low-maintenance, aromatic ground cover.

Sowing Instructions

Sow seeds indoors from February to April in trays or pots filled with moist, well-drained compost. Lightly press the seeds into the surface but do not cover, as they need light to germinate. Keep the compost moist and maintain a temperature of 18-21°C. Lavender seeds may require a cold stratification period, so you can place them in the fridge for 2-3 weeks before sowing to improve germination. Germination typically takes 14-21 days.

For outdoor sowing, wait until April to May, and select a sunny location with well-drained, fertile soil. Scatter the seeds thinly and press them gently into the soil without covering. Keep the soil moist until germination occurs. Once the seedlings are large enough, thin them to about 30 cm apart.

Lavender Munstead thrives in full sun and well-drained soil. It is drought-tolerant once established and needs little maintenance, although occasional watering during dry spells and pruning after flowering will help maintain its shape and health. This hardy plant is perfect for creating a fragrant, long-lasting addition to any garden.

Lavender Munstead is a delightful and versatile choice for gardeners looking to add a touch of English countryside charm to their outdoor space. Its compact size, fragrant blooms, and low-maintenance nature make it an ideal addition to herb gardens, borders, or containers.
