Sowing Instructions
Start basil indoors from March to May and transplant outdoors from late May once the risk of frost has passed. It thrives in warmth, so choose a sunny, sheltered spot.
Coriander can be sown directly outdoors from April to June. It dislikes transplanting, so sow where it will grow. Thin seedlings to allow airflow and prevent bolting.
Parsley is slow to germinate — soak seeds overnight before sowing indoors from January to April or again in late summer. Transplant outdoors from March onwards. Keep soil moist and partially shaded.
Chives can be started indoors from February to April or sown directly from March. They’re perennial and benefit from division every few years. Harvest leaves regularly to encourage fresh growth.
Mint is best grown in containers to prevent spreading. Sow indoors from March and transplant from April. It prefers moist soil and partial shade. Cut back regularly to maintain vigour.
Summer Savory is an annual that prefers warmth. Sow indoors from March and transplant outdoors from April. Harvest before flowering for best flavour.
Use peat-free compost, ensure good drainage, and position containers in full sun or partial shade depending on the herb. Regular harvesting encourages bushier growth and prolongs the season.
