Foxglove Wild Seeds - Irish Plants Direct

A stately native biennial with tall spires of tubular, bell-shaped flowers in shades of purple, pink and mauve, often speckled inside. Wild Foxglove thrives in woodland edges, hedgerows and naturalistic borders, flowering from June to September.

Its blooms are highly attractive to bumblebees, moths and butterflies, including the Heath Fritillary and Foxglove Pug Moth. This species self-seeds freely and naturalises well in semi-shaded areas with well-drained soil. A classic choice for wildlife friendly and rewilding schemes.

Sowing instructions

Sow thinly on the surface of moist compost—do not cover, as light aids germination. Keep in a cool, bright place and maintain moisture. For outdoor sowing, scatter in prepared soil and rake in lightly. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle, spacing 30–40 cm apart.

Grow and maintenance

Grow in sun or partial shade in well drained soil. Water during dry spells and allow plants to self-seed naturally. Cut back spent flower spikes to encourage basal growth. Handle with care—foxglove is toxic if ingested.

Uses and benefits

Perfect for adding vertical interest and pollinator support to naturalistic plantings. Wild Foxglove offers dramatic form, ecological value and effortless charm in semi-wild and shaded settings.
