Cucumis sativus is a classic and highly productive variety renowned for its long, straight fruits and smooth, dark green skin.

The name Cucumis comes from the Latin for cucumber, while sativus denotes its cultivated nature. This variety is a gardener’s favourite due to its exceptional yield, excellent flavour, and versatility in the kitchen.

Sowing Instructions

Sow seeds outdoors from April to June in a sunny, well-drained location. Plant seeds 2-3 cm deep, spacing them 30 cm apart. Water gently and ensure the soil remains moist during germination, which usually occurs within 7-14 days. Thin seedlings to 30 cm apart to give them room to grow.

For an earlier start, sow seeds indoors from February to April in individual pots filled with compost. Keep at a temperature of 18-21°C until germination, then transplant seedlings outdoors after the last frost, ensuring they are spaced 30 cm apart.

Water regularly, especially during dry spells, and provide support for the plants as they grow, either with a trellis or by training them along wires. Use a balanced fertiliser to encourage strong growth and maximum fruit production. Harvest cucumbers when they are firm, dark green, and approximately 30-40 cm long for the best flavour and texture.

Cucumber Telegraph Improved is a reliable, high-yielding variety perfect for gardeners seeking a traditional cucumber with excellent taste and productivity throughout the summer months.
