Cornichon de Paris is a traditional French cucumber variety long associated with Parisian markets and kitchens.

 

It is prized for producing large numbers of small crisp cucumbers, ideal for making authentic French cornichons. The fruits are short and cylindrical, with smooth green skin and a firm crunchy texture.

 

This variety is highly productive and quick to crop, making it a favourite for gardeners who enjoy preserving. The cucumbers are best harvested when just 2 to 5 cm long, at which stage they are tender, flavoursome, and perfect for pickling. Left to grow larger, they can also be eaten fresh in salads, though their true value lies in their use as gherkins.

Germination 7 to 14 days at 20–24°C

Soil and Position Fertile, moisture retentive soil in full sun. Best grown against supports or netting

Harvest July to October. Pick fruits at 2–5 cm for best flavour and texture

 

Sowing Instructions

 

Sow seeds 1 cm deep on edge in pots or trays of moist compost. Keep warm until germination. Transplant seedlings into larger pots or directly into the garden once all risk of frost has passed. Provide canes, trellis, or netting for climbing.

 

Grow and Maintenance

 

Keep soil consistently moist and mulch to conserve water. Feed with a potassium rich fertiliser once flowering begins. Pick fruits regularly at the gherkin stage to encourage continuous cropping. Protect young plants from slugs and snails.
