Cucamelon Seeds..

Cucamelons are a fascinating and increasingly popular crop, native to Mexico and Central America where they have been cultivated for centuries. Known locally as Sandiitas de Ratón or “little mouse watermelons,” these plants belong to the cucumber family but are a distinct species in their own right.

 

The vigorous vines can reach up to 2–3 metres when supported, producing masses of tiny oval fruits about the size of grapes. Each fruit is patterned like a miniature watermelon but has the crisp refreshing taste of cucumber with a citrusy lime twist.

 

Unlike cucumbers, cucamelons are naturally resistant to many common pests and tolerate dry conditions well, making them an easy and rewarding crop for gardeners of all levels.

Sow April to June indoors for transplanting, or directly outdoors once soil has warmed

Germination 5 to 7 days at 18–22°C

Soil and Position Fertile, free draining soil in full sun. Requires trellis, netting, or canes for climbing

Height 200–300 cm with trailing or climbing habit

Harvest July to October. Pick fruits when grape sized for best flavour

 

Sowing Instructions

 

Sow seeds 1 cm deep in pots or trays of moist compost. Keep warm until germination. Transplant seedlings into larger pots or directly into the garden once all risk of frost has passed. Provide strong support for climbing.

 

Grow and Maintenance

 

Water regularly during dry spells and mulch to conserve moisture. Feed with a balanced fertiliser every two weeks once fruiting begins. Pick fruits regularly to encourage continuous cropping. Plants are generally trouble free and rarely affected by pests.
