Cornflower Blue Diadem Seed

A striking cornflower with sky blue double blooms and dark purple centres carried on tall upright stems through the summer season.

 

Cornflower Blue Diadem is a classic cottage garden annual known for its vivid sky blue flowers which form full double heads with a contrasting dark purple centre creating a bold and eye catching display in borders and meadow style plantings.

 

Plants grow with a clump forming habit and produce slender grey green stems that reach up to seventy five centimetres in height giving height movement and colour to summer displays.

 

The flowers are rich in nectar and pollen and attract bees butterflies and many other pollinating insects making this variety an excellent choice for wildlife friendly gardens.

 

Blue Diadem thrives in full sun and well drained soil and is well suited to poorer ground where it still performs strongly.

 

The blooms last well when cut and can also be dried for simple rustic arrangements.

Sowing and planting

Sow outdoors from March to May or from August to October for earlier flowers the following year

Germination takes approximately fourteen to twenty one days at temperatures between ten and eighteen degrees Celsius

Grow in free draining soil in full sun

Height seventy to one hundred centimetres

Spread ten to fifty centimetres depending on spacing

Sowing instructions

Sow thinly in shallow drills around five millimetres deep and cover lightly with soil

Keep moist until seedlings appear then thin to allow strong upright growth

Autumn sowings overwinter and flower earlier the following summer

 

Growing and maintenance

Deadhead regularly to encourage continuous flowering

Support may be helpful in exposed sites due to tall stems

Water during prolonged dry spells but avoid waterlogging
