Coriander Herb Seeds - Irish Plants Direct

Coriandrum sativum is a popular and aromatic herb known for its distinct flavour, with citrusy, slightly spicy leaves and seeds that are warm, sweet, and nutty. The Latin name Coriandrum is derived from the Greek word koriannon, meaning "bug," due to the strong scent of the leaves, while sativum indicates its cultivated nature. The fresh leaves, known as cilantro, are commonly used in salads, salsas, and garnishes, while the dried seeds, known as coriander, are a staple in spice mixes and cooking.

Reaching a height of 40-50 cm, coriander grows quickly in well-drained, fertile soil, thriving in both full sun and partial shade. It is ideal for herb gardens, container growing, and as a companion plant in vegetable patches.

A highly versatile herb, coriander is easy to grow, with both its leaves and seeds providing culinary delight in the kitchen.

Sowing Instructions

Sow seeds outdoors from March to June in well-prepared soil. Plant seeds 1-2 cm deep, spacing them 20-25 cm apart. Water gently and keep the soil moist, as coriander prefers cooler conditions for germination. Thin seedlings to 15 cm apart as they grow.

For an earlier start, sow seeds indoors from February to April in seed trays or pots. Transplant young plants outdoors once the risk of frost has passed, ensuring they are spaced 20-25 cm apart.

Water regularly to keep the soil moist, and provide a balanced fertiliser during the growing season. To harvest leaves, cut the stems at the base when they are young and tender. For seeds, allow the plants to flower and produce seed heads, then collect them when they turn brown and dry.

Coriander is a fast-growing and productive herb, perfect for culinary use and adding fresh, aromatic flavour to a wide variety of dishes.
