A handy tip thin the carrots in evening after watering to try and avoid the carrot root fly.

Carrots need a firm fertile crumbling soil that has not been manure in the last year. Dig the ground in autumn and add a general fertiliser two weeks before sowing.
Water well in dry weather to prevent splitting. Try to thin the carrots in the evening to avoid carrot fly.

Sow from March onwards and successional sow through to June in open ground. The seed is extremely small but try to sow as thinly as possible in drills 1cm deep and in rows 15cm apart when the seedlings appear thin to around 5cm apart.
