Canterbury Bells Double Mixed Seed – Irish Plants Direct

 

A charming biennial producing tall spikes of large double bell shaped flowers in shades of blue pink white and lavender. Known botanically as Campanula medium Double Mixed this traditional cottage garden favourite is valued for its showy blooms and long flowering season. The elegant double bells create a striking display in borders and are excellent for cutting.

 

 

Unlike single flowered strains Double Mixed offers fuller blooms with extra petals giving a more dramatic effect. Its tall upright habit makes it ideal for the back of borders and for cottage style plantings.

 

Seed Qty Approx 0.5 grams

 

Sow May to July indoors or in a seed bed outdoors. Germination 14 to 21 days at 18–21°C. Soil and Position Fertile well drained soil; prefers full sun or partial shade. Height Approx 60 to 80 cm; tall upright habit. Flowering June to August the following year; large double blooms in mixed colours.

 

Sowing instructions

 

Sow seeds thinly on the surface of moist compost or prepared soil and press lightly without covering as light aids germination. Keep at 18 to 21°C until seedlings appear. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle into trays or pots. Harden off and plant out in autumn spacing 30 cm apart for flowering the following summer.

 

Grow and maintenance

 

Grow in fertile well drained soil in full sun or partial shade. Water regularly during dry spells and feed with a balanced fertiliser to encourage strong growth. Support tall stems if exposed to wind. Remove faded flowers to prolong the display or allow some to set seed for naturalising.

 

Uses and benefits

 

Perfect for cottage gardens borders and cutting gardens. The tall spikes of double blooms provide height and colour in summer displays. Excellent as cut flowers for arrangements. Highly ornamental and easy to grow Canterbury Bells are a traditional favourite that return reliably when allowed to self seed.
