A bright and cheerful mixture of Californian poppies producing masses of silky single blooms in shades of orange yellow red and white. Known botanically as Eschscholzia californica Single Mix this hardy annual is valued for its drought tolerance and ability to thrive in poor soils.

 

The finely cut grey green foliage and vibrant flowers create a striking display in borders containers and wildflower plantings.

 

 

Unlike many bedding plants Californian poppies require little care and will often self sow to return year after year. Their long flowering season and resilience make them a favourite for low maintenance gardens.

Sow March to May directly outdoors where they are to flower. Germination 14 to 21 days at 15–20°C. Soil and Position Light free draining soil; prefers full sun. Height Approx 25 to 30 cm; compact bushy habit. Flowering June to September; masses of silky single blooms in mixed colours.

 

Sowing instructions

 

Prepare a fine seed bed in a sunny position. Sow seeds thinly 0.5 cm deep in rows 30 cm apart. Water gently and keep soil moist until seedlings establish. Thin to 15 cm spacing once large enough to handle. For extended flowering sow in small patches every two to three weeks.

 

Grow and maintenance

 

Grow in full sun in light well drained soil. Water sparingly once plants are established as they are drought tolerant. Deadhead spent blooms to prolong flowering or allow some to set seed for natural self sowing. Plants dislike transplanting so sow directly where they are to flower.
