Broad Bean The Sutton Seeds

 

Broad Bean The Sutton (Vicia faba L.) is a compact, dwarf-growing variety that is perfect for smaller gardens, exposed sites, or container cultivation.

 

Despite its shorter height, it produces an excellent crop of tender, succulent beans with a deliciously rich flavour.

 

This variety is particularly well suited for autumn or early spring sowings, offering a reliable harvest even in less favourable conditions.

 

The neat, bushy plants grow to around 45 cm, making them easy to manage without staking or heavy support. Their smaller stature makes them more resistant to wind damage while still producing a generous yield of full pods.

Sowing Instructions

 

Sow directly outdoors from February to April, or in October–November in mild regions for overwintering. Plant seeds 5 cm deep and 15 cm apart in rows 25 cm apart. Because of their dwarf growth habit, these beans require less space than taller varieties, making them ideal for container or small-plot growing.

 

Water regularly during flowering and pod formation. Plants are naturally sturdy and need little to no staking. Pinch out the tips once pods begin to set to deter blackfly and encourage healthy cropping.

 

Harvest pods while still young for the sweetest flavour, or allow to mature for larger beans.
