Aster Unicum Mix Seeds – Callistephus chinensis 

A half hardy annual with spectacular needle-like blooms in a vivid mix of rose, violet, salmon, white, and blue. The flowers are large and spider-like, with fine, quilled petals that create a dramatic, textural effect atop sturdy stems.

 

Ideal for borders, cutting gardens, and late-season displays. The plants are upright and pyramidal in shape, reaching up to 70 cm tall, and bloom prolifically from midsummer into autumn. Highly attractive to butterflies and bees, and excellent for floral arrangements.

Flowering July to October; deadhead to prolong flowering.

 

Sowing instructions

 

Sow between March and May onto moist, free-draining compost. Do not cover seed, as light aids germination. Place in a propagator or cover with a clear lid or bag until germination. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle and grow on in trays or pots. Harden off and plant out after the last frost.

 

Grow and maintenance

 

Plant in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil. Water regularly during dry spells. Deadhead spent blooms to encourage continued flowering. Stake taller stems in exposed sites. Avoid overhead watering to reduce risk of mildew.
