Alyssum Royal Carpet Seeds

Alyssum 'Royal Carpet' Seeds – Lobularia maritima  

A compact half hardy annual with masses of tiny, fragrant flowers in rich shades of purple, lavender, and violet. The plants form low, spreading mats that bloom continuously from early summer to autumn, creating a soft, scented carpet effect.

Ideal for edging sunny borders, trailing from containers, or filling gaps in rockeries and gravel gardens. The blooms are highly attractive to pollinators and release a sweet honey-like fragrance, especially in the warmth of midday.

Sow February to May on a warm windowsill or in a propagator.

Germination 7 to 21 days in warm, steady conditions.

Soil and Position Loam, chalk, or sandy soils that are acidic, alkaline, or neutral. Plant in full sun or light shade.

Height Approx 10 to 15 cm; low, spreading habit.

Flowering June to October; deadhead to prolong flowering.

 

Sowing instructions

 

Sow between February and May onto sieved, moist compost and press the seed down gently. Do not cover, as light aids germination. Keep warm and evenly moist. When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant into trays spacing plants 5 cm apart to grow on. Harden off and plant out after the last frost.

 

Grow and maintenance

 

Plant in full sun in free draining soil. Water regularly while establishing, then moderately. Deadhead spent blooms to encourage continued flowering. Trim back lightly after the first flush to promote further blooms and maintain compact growth.
