Trees and shrubs give shape and structure to a garden, there is a wide choice available and they provide many different roles in the garden. Hedging plants mark boundaries and also provide valuable windbreak these will need to be trimmed regularly to keep them in shape. They’re are evergreen and deciduous shrubs, some growing faster than others with many producing valuable food, nectar and shelter for wildlife then there are shrubs that will grow in those awkward shady areas of the garden, banks and slopes and climbing shrubs that bring fantastic eye catching colour for long periods of time.
Many shrubs not only provide many months of colour and wonderful scent they are great for stopping unwanted weeds by spreading out and providing excellent ground cover.

How To Plant Your Shrub..

After choosing your shrub to suit your area prepare the planting hole by making the hole as deep as the container and slightly wider to accommodate the roots, slope the sides a little so the hole is wider near the top, this will encourage the roots to grow laterally outward into the soil, incorporate plenty of organic material or compost to the planting hole. Remove the plant from its pot carefully and loosen and untangle any circling or snarled roots. Place the plant in the empty hole then backfill firming the soil around the buried root ball to remove any air pockets. Water the shrub and continue to water regularly until the plant is established especially if there is a warm spell, mulching with compost or bark can help soil retain moisture.
