Bare Root Shrubs...

Bare root shrubs and trees are available usually from October through to April but this is dependant on the weather, the temperature has to decrease so that the plants are dormant before they can be lifted ready to be transplanted. One of the advantages of planting bare root is cost they can be a lot cheaper than pot grown plants especially if there is a lot of shrubs to be planted such as hedges or large borders. Disadvantages of bare root planting is that the window for planting is not long and there can be restricted choice and availability.

Plant any bare root shrubs or trees as soon as possible but if this isn't possible due to adverse weather conditions such as frost or waterlogged ground then it is best to temporarily heel them into soil until conditions improve. This is done by simply digging a trench and planting the shrubs to ensure the roots are buried until a later date.

It may be beneficial to improve the soil structure before planting if the soil is heavy, sandy or compacted do this by digging in plenty of organic matter.

Before planting cut off any damaged or broken roots or shorten any roots that are too long by cutting them back to half their length then soak the plant in a bucket of water. Prepare the hole by digging it wide enough to accommodate the roots comfortably, place the shrub in the hole backfill treading down as you go to remove any air pockets then water in well.
