Garden Pests... Club Root

Club Root

Clubroot is a serious fungal infection that affects the roots of brassicas such as cabbage, cauliflower and turnips, it can also affect ornamental plants of the same family including wallflowers, aubrietia and stocks. The roots of the plants are swollen and distorted and this causes poor growth and wilting foliage causing the plants to die. The spores live in the soil and can be spread by wind, transferred by tools or by foot. Unfortunately once the soil has been infected it can live there for up to 10 years and there is no chemical control available.

Prevention is the key raising the ph level in acidic soil by applying lime may help as will improving drainage, always buy plants from a reputable supplier and ensure tools are clean after use. Problems in the vegetable bed can be helped by rotating which plants you grow in which bed and don't grow brassica's in an infected bed if you know there is a problem.
