Description
Pea Hurst Green Shaft Seeds - Irish Plants Direct
This award winning main crop pea is very heavy cropping with plenty of dark green double pods that contain 9 - 11 peas each over a long period of time.
This is a tall growing variety that's crop is at the top of the plant for easy picking.
Resistant to mildew.
Seed Qty 400
Sow March - June
Germination 7 - 14 days
Loam - sandy soil that's alkaline or neutral
Harvest May - September
Companion Plants French beans, carrots, cucumber, radish, turnip
Do not plant with Onions, chives and potatoes
Harvest when the pods are full. Picking from the plant regularly will keep it producing the more you pick the more delicious peas you get!
A good source of vitamin B1
Eat fresh or lightly boil or steam.
Pea's require a sunny area that has been well dug in the autumn and plenty of manure added to retain moisture, they do not grow well in acidic soil so liming may be necessary a few weeks before sowing.
Sow from mid March when the soil has warmed up then again in late April for a succession of peas.
Dig a flat bottomed drill 5cm deep and water the drill, sow the seed around 5cm apart allowing 75cm between rows enough room has to be left between rows to stake the peas and harvest the crop.
When the plants reach 10cm high they need to be supported with canes, pea nets, twigs or chicken wire.
Alternatively sow indoors on a warm window sill or greenhouse in pots or an old piece of guttering from February for planting out in March.
