Flax Scarlett Linum RHS Seeds - Irish Plants Direct

Linum usitatissimum 'Scarlett' is a vibrant and eye-catching annual that brings a burst of rich red to any garden. Known for its delicate, slender stems and striking scarlet blooms, this variety of flax is perfect for adding colour and lightness to borders, meadows, or wildflower gardens.

The name Linum comes from the Latin word for "flax," while usitatissimum means "most useful," reflecting the plant's historical significance as a source of fiber. Scarlett offers stunning, bright red flowers that contrast beautifully with its blue-green foliage, creating a bold, yet graceful effect in the garden.

This easy-to-grow plant thrives in well-drained, moderately fertile soil and enjoys full sun. Flax Scarlett grows to a height of 30 - 45 cm, making it ideal for the front of borders, container displays, or as part of a mixed wildflower garden.

Its vibrant flowers attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies, making it a great addition to a wildlife-friendly space.

Flax Scarlett is part of the RHS Seed Scheme, ensuring you receive high-quality seeds that produce strong, healthy plants with abundant, long-lasting blooms.

Sowing Instructions

Indoors: Sow seeds in trays or pots filled with moist, well-drained compost from March to April. Lightly cover the seeds with compost and keep at 18-21°C. Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into individual pots and harden off before planting outdoors after the last frost.

Outdoors: Sow directly into prepared, weed-free soil from April to May. Lightly cover the seeds with soil and keep moist until germination occurs. Thin seedlings to the recommended spacing for healthy growth.

Flax Scarlett is perfect for adding a splash of colour to your garden with its vibrant red blooms and easy care. Its cheerful flowers and attractive foliage make it an excellent choice for borders, wildflower meadows, or as part of a cutting garden.
