A handy tip thin in the evening after watering to try and avoid carrot root fly. 

 

Carrots need a firm and fertile soil that has not been manured in the last year. Dig in autumn and apply a general fertiliser two weeks before sowing. Water well during dry weather to prevent the carrot from splitting. Try to thin during the evening to avoid carrot root fly.
