☀️ A handy tip thin the carrots in the evening after watering to try to avoid carrot root fly.
Carrots need a firm fertile soil thats not been manured  in the last year. Dig the soil in autumn and apply a general fertiliser two weeks before sowing. Water the carrots during dry weather to prevent them splitting and try to thin in the evening to avoid carrot fly.
Sow from March onwards under cloches to harvest an early crop in July and  make successional sowings through to the end of May. The seed is extremely small but try to sow as thinly as possible in drills 1cm deep and in rows 15cm apart when the seedlings appear thin to around 10cm apart.
