Garden Pests... Capsid Bug

Capsid Bug

These insects cause damage and spoil the appearance of a variety of ornamental plants, fruit and vegetables, giving a tattered look to leaves and developing flower buds. Many small brown edged holes appear in the leaves, flowers or the buds. They may be distorted or not appear at all, the growing tips can also be damaged as these bugs suck and feed on the sap leaving toxins behind before they move on.

There are many species of these small beetle like insects and many don't cause any damage to plants in the garden, the bugs are usually around 6mm long brown or green but can also vary in appearance with long legs and feelers and are most active between May and August although the bug has usually moved on before you realise the plant has been attacked. Their eggs are laid in woody stems or tree bark and depending on the species will over winter in plant debris. Tidy and remove any dead vegetation and keeping any weeds at bay will help stop any infestations.
There are a number of bug gun sprays on the market but do not spray the flowers as this can affect any pollinators that may land on the plant.
