We are now entering the two coldest months of the year with rain and wind with the occasional days of hail, snow and ice the last thing we feel like doing is gardening. Now is time for a bit of arm chair gardening there's time to plan the changes to the garden whether in the borders or rotating the veg patch check out the fantastic selection of seeds on offer and maybe try growing something new.
There is however the nice days the days when its possible to get out and enjoy the fresh air and do a few jobs plant bareroot shrubs, trees and hedges introduce fruit for summer pickings or simply tidy and move plants into new positions for the new gardening year ahead.
Make sure not to forget the birds hanging fat balls from trees and shrubs and making sure that feeders are full and water is available birds are such a valuable addition and the gardeners friend.



SHRUBS AND TREES


Prune the side shoots of Wisteria
Plant bareroot roses
Prune roses
Check any tree stakes and ties to make sure they are not to loose or tight
Cut back the foliage of ornamental grasses
Plant bareroot shrubs,hedges and trees
Move any deciduous shrubs and trees
Brush any snow off trees and shrubs
Cut back Virginia Creeper or Boston Ivy


IN THE BORDERS


Cut down the dead foliage of Sedums
Lift and divide any herbaceous Perennials
Clean and rake any dead leaves from the border
Protect any plants from frost or winds with fleece



IN THE VEG PATCH


Dig the veg patch on a dry day
Plan this years veg plot
Continue to harvest Parsnips, Leeks, Cabbage, Brussels Sprouts and Broccoli
Prune Pear and Apple Trees
Prune currant bushes
Start to force rhubarb
Start to chit early potatoes
Order bareroot fruit
Plant out Strawberries



IN THE TUNNEL OR GREENHOUSE


Check for any pests such as white or greenfly
Sow Broad Beans in pots for an early crop
Sow onion seed
Sow Chilli and Californian peppers in a heated propagator
Ventilate on sunny days
Remove any snow
Wash old pots ready for planting
Pot up Strawberries and leave under cover for an early crop
Wash and clean the tunnel or greenhouse if it wasn't done last year
